The way that mTrial
is designed is that the PC component of mTrial must know the identity (that
is, the HotSync ID) of the Palm handheld with which it is exchanging data.
If you get the error message that looks
like

then the identity/HotSync ID of the Palm
(in this case xSample Student) is unknown to the PC component of mTrial,
because no student account (or tutor account) exists that has the Student ID
(or Tutor ID) of xSample Student. If the Palm handheld has a HotSync ID that
doesn't match a Student ID (or a Tutor ID), then no data can flow between
the PC and the Palm.
There are two ways to address this: You can
change the HotSync ID on the Palm to match an existing Student ID (or Tutor
ID), or you can create a new student account or (tutor account) whose
Student ID (or Tutor ID) matches the HotSync ID of the Palm handheld.
Changing the HotSync ID
- Delete mTrial from the Palm (see the
Palm's help guide for information)
- Open Palm Desktop Software
- In the top right corner of the Palm
Desktop screen, you'll see a menu next to the word 'Users'
- Open the menu and choose the 'Edit
Users...' menu item
- Click on the HotSync ID in the list that
you want to change
- Click the 'Rename...' button
- Type in the new HotSync ID you want to
assign to the Palm handheld, then click OK
- Complete a HotSync operation
- Install mTrial on the Palm handheld,
then complete a HotSync operation
- Complete one last HotSync operation to
transfer data from the PC to the Palm.
Creating a new Student (or Tutor)
account
- Open mTrial on the PC
- Click the button at the top of the
screen, labeled Students
- Click the button at the bottom of the
screen, labeled Add...
- Type the required information, making
sure to use the HotSync ID from the Palm as the Student ID in the first
text field.
- Complete a HotSync ID
