Use the mTrial Recorder screen (Figure 13.1) to collect data for a student.
Figure 13.1 – mTrial Recorder Screen for Mass TrialThe session type you chose on the mTrial Setup screen – on the mTrial Setup screen – determines what options are available on the mTrial Recorder screen.
The methods for recording data for Mass Trial, Distractor Trial, Expanded Trial, and Random Rotation sessions are described below.
Record Mass Trial Data
Figure 13.2 below shows an example of the screen as it initially appears after starting a Mass Trial session.
Figure 13.2 – mTrial Recorder Screen for Mass TrialIn the top left corner of the screen is a label that indicates that the session is Mass Trial (MT) session. Also at the top of the screen is a row of buttons: C (correct), I (incorrect), N (non-responsive), and P (prompted).
Below the row of buttons are the same CA, Sd, and AT menus as were on the previous screen, set to the choices you made before.
Record a trial response by tapping any of the four buttons. Each time you tap a button, you record a trial response for the session; and you can record up to 30 trial responses in a single session. At any time you want to select any other CA, Sd, and/or AT, use any or all of the three (CA/Sd/AT) menus.
Figure 13.3 – mTrial Recorder Screen for Mass TrialIn Figure 13.3 the text “Trial #14” indicates that you are going to record the 14th trial of the session. The text “Total: 76%” indicates that the total percent correct for all the trial responses is 76%. The text “AT: 76%” indicates that the percent correct for the Acquisition Target is 76%. (In Mass Trial sessions, the total percent correct and the AT percent will always be equal, but they may not be equal in Expanded Trial and Random Rotation sessions).
After recording some trial responses, you’ll see that the progress bar at the bottom of the screen is being filled in, to indicate how may trials you’ve recorded and how many trials you have left to record.
At any time, it’s possible to go back to previous responses and change them, if necessary. If a left or right arrow is present on either end of the progress bar, click them to move through the previous responses (Figure 13.4). In the figure below, a non-responsive response was recorded for the 9th trial.
Figure 13.4 – mTrial Recorder Screen for Mass TrialYou may record responses for up to 30 trials, but it’s not necessary to record all 30. At any time in the session, you can tap Done (Figure 13.5) to and the session and return to the mTrial Setup screen.

Record Distractor Trial Data
Figure 13.7 shows an example of the screen as it initially appears after starting a Distractor Trial session, using one Acquisition Target. Notice that recording Distractor Trial sessions is different from recording Mass Trial sessions. When recording Distractor Trials, the ATs you have at the mTrial Recorder Screen are the ones that you chose at the mTrial Setup Screen.
Figure 13.7 – mTrial Recorder Screen for Distractor TrialNotice that when recording Distractor Trials there is an Add Distractor... menu item appearing on this screen.
You can add up to 6 distractors to the session any time you want – before recording your first trial or while the session is in progress.
To add a distractor, tap the Add Distractor... menu item (Figure 13.8).
Figure 13.8 – mTrial Recorder Screen for Distractor TrialThis will open a screen call Select Distractor (Figure 13.9) where you can select any distractor from any Curriculum Area.
Figure 13.9 – Select Distractor ScreenAfter you select a distractor, it’ll appear in the list (Figure 13.10).
Figure 13.10 – Distractor MenuNo trial data is collected for the distractors, but the distractors that are chosen (when you end the session) are recorded as part of the session data and stored in a database.
Record Expanded Trial Data
Figure 13.11 below shows an example of the screen as it initially appears after starting an Expanded Trial session.
Figure 13.11 – mTrial Recorder Screen for Expanded TrialThis screen has nearly the same functionality as for a Distractor Trial session, except on this screen you can record trial data for the individual distractors you chose.
To record a trial response (Figure 13.12), tap to highlight either an Acquisition Target (AT) or one of the distractors you’ve selected, then tap either the C, I, N, or P buttons.
Figure 13.12 – mTrial Recorder Screen for Expanded Trial With an Incorrect Response Recorded for D1: ElephantJust as in the Distractor Trial session, tap Add... to add a distractor to the list. (An Expanded Trial session can have up to 6 distractors in the list).
You can review and adjust your recorded trial data for the distractors in the same way as you are able to review and adjust your recorded trial data for the acquisition target.
Record Random Rotation Data
Figure 13.13 below shows an example of the screen as it initially appears after starting an Random Rotation session, with one Acquisition Target (AT).
Figure 13.13 – mTrial Recorder Screen for Random Rotation TrialThis screen has exactly the same functionality as for an Expanded Trial session. Note that in the top left corner, the Random Rotation session is denoted by an RR instead of an ET.
